Welcome to Midwest Girls Society!!!!

The day has finally come, Midwest Girls Society is here!!!! We are so happy to have the opportunity to share our interests with you and promote Midwest women like ourselves. There is so much talent in the Midwest and we feel no one is catering to these women. You hear about things happening on the coasts, but what about the Midwest? We hope to bring encouragement to you along with great information about food, beauty, fashion and music. Here's to the Midwest ladies!!!

In the Kitchen
At my home we gather at the harvest table whether for a bowl of heart warming soup or for our favorite oatmeal banana pancakes. It's the place where friends and family can relax after the challenges of the day and share conversation and a wholesome meal.
I invite you to the harvest table to savor some of my favorite meals! Many of my meals are vegetarian and vegan friendly. There will be a bit of something for everyone.
Also look out for monthly features from the Recipe Tree where you can find timeless family recipes from my childhood.

From the Harvest Table

Today why not enjoy a quick and delicious breakfast!

Vegan oatmeal with apple butter
Ingredients (serves 1, adjust ingredients if you want to feed a group)
1/2 cup of old fashioned oats
1 cup of almond, soy, or coconut milk
1 tbsp good quality cinnamon
half of an apple or red pear cubed
a handful of golden raisins
a handful of slivered almonds or chopped walnuts
1 tbsp of agave nectar (if you want to make it non-vegan you can use honey)
2 tbsp of apple butter

  1. Bring almond milk to a gentle boil and add oats, apple or pear, cinnamon, and raisins. Cook to desired thickness. I recommend 3-4 minutes on medium heat.
  2. Remove from heat and pour into a bowl. Top with agave nectar or honey, apple butter, and almonds or walnuts.
  3. Enjoy this quick, healthy, and delicious breakfast!

In the Mirror
Whether you put your hair in a ponytail or it’s a hat day, you look ‘In the Mirror’ right? You may put on a full face of makeup or just some moisturizer and lip-gloss and then, you take a quick glance ‘In the Mirror’. I want to help you look and feel your best by showing you tricks of the trade, product reviews, hair trends and diy beauty recipes. I hope to show you that taking care of your skin and hair isn't that intimidating.  In the Mirror may feature things that you already know but may have forgotten and hopefully a fresh approach to it! I don’t claim to know everything about hair or skincare, this is just me, sharing my knowledge, with you. I hope you enjoy my tips because I enjoy sharing them!

Spring is in the Hair

Maiden Braids

To start this segment off I want to show you a little spring hair inspiration. So, maiden braids... they have been popular for a few seasons now but here are a few fresh approaches to this cute hairstyle. This style looks great with a simple spring dress or a t shirt and jeans, it's very versatile!

The classic - pulling pigtail braids to the crown of your head, crisscrossing and pinning into place

All the way around - this is more for very long hair, one braid should wrap up and the other, down and around, tuck and pin ends away

Low chignon - braid hair on one side, pull around crown of head and pin, roll and tuck the remainder of hair into a soft bun at the nape of your neck

Soft and ethereal - this can be applied to all of the above, pull the braids apart and mess them up a bit for a softer look, if you don't, you might look a bit more... Swiss :)

I also like to keep a few wisps around my face, I find that this hairstyle is best when it looks messier, not perfect. All of these styles could also be french braided but that adds a bit more difficulty when doing it on yourself. It could also be beautiful as a wedding style.

In the Armoire
My closet is my biggest obsession. In fact, I think about fashion all the time. It's a problem that will never seize to go away, but this is why I am the perfect person to talk to you about fashion. In the Armoire brings you weekly fashion updates from how to wear items, to current trends, to our favorites here at Midwest Girls Society.

As today is the launch of Midwest Girls Society, I wanted to give you a little taster of what's to come under In the Armoire. Shirt dresses are a hot ticket this Spring/Summer 2014, they were seen all over the runway. But how do you take a runway trend and make it your own? Well, I've put together a Shirt Dress Fashion Board for you. One shirt dress worn three ways giving you three totally different looks. Grab yourself a shirt dress and start creating some great looks!
