In the Mirror: Get your color on

I stopped tanning in beds about 10 years ago and now that I'm in my 30’s, taking care of my skin has never been so important to me. I'm not saying that I never layout in the sun but when I do, I'm always protected. So on those days that I want to show my porcelain white legs but maybe they're a bit too porcelain-fake bake. I've used a lot of sunless tanning lotions over the years with results such as, orangey streaks, blotches and unevenness. I want to share with you 2 of my favorite self tanners that i pretty much swear by. Now, any product if not applied correctly will not have the best results, so here are my tips for getting your best “fake bake”.

Fake bake! Funny name, great results! You can apply all over but I mainly just do my legs.  This product comes out colored so you can see while you're applying, then it gradually gets darker in a few hours. Find it here.

Prep:
Shave.
Exfoliate.  Really exfoliate! Especially the rough areas, elbows, ankle, knees.
Moisturize. This will prep your skin and even out dry areas, kind of like a primer. Apply heavier on feet, ankles, elbows and knees
Wear gloves. You'll regret it if you don’t! They come with the box, I rinse mine when I'm finished and reuse them.

Application:
Apply. Like you're applying lotion, long even strokes up and down the leg. It blends and dries pretty quickly so keep moving.
Bend your knees and elbows when applying to avoid wrinkles. Sweep it into your feet.  If you want to apply to hands, apply sparingly to one with the glove on and let it dry, then to the other. Don't apply to palms or face. Get some assistance for your back:)

You can mix 1 part lotion 2 parts tanner if you want just a little sun kissed look.
If you only apply to legs, wash your hands immediately after, in case any made its way on your wrists or forearms. Don’t forget to wash your gloves!
 Maintenance:
Avoid working out, swimming, cleaning, anything that requires getting wet for at least 6 hours
Don't exfoliate, you will remove all your hard work:)
Don't take long steamy showers
Do moisturize every day
Do wash with even pressure to ensure even fading (especially around the ankles)
Reapply every 3-4 days

This product will fade like a natural tan, just a bit faster.

Sally Hansen Airbrush legs

Goes on just like makeup! This is also one of my faves and is perfect for a quick touch up or as maintenance in between applications of fake bake. It comes in 4 shades I use shade Medium glow. Find in here.

If you want a quick tan and don't have time to wait for it to get darker, try this! This product is just like airbrush makeup and will completely come off in one wash. No need to wear gloves! Goes on tan! For best results follow all prep and application directions above (exfoliate, moisturize, blend, maintain). This product can be a bit messy when applying so be aware of where you spray. It's recommended to spray into your hands first, then spread on your legs.

This product is recommended for the legs but could very easily be put on other parts of the body as well. The heavier you apply, the darker your legs will get, just like makeup :)
There you have it! I hope you enjoy these products as much as I do. What are your favorite sunless tanners?
